Student placements

Student nurses at Richard House Children's Hospice

The majority of our students are student nurses from either City or Southbank University who are placed to work with our care team on a regular basis.

Requests from other students will be considered where space allows.

Due to our small team we will only take one student at anytime to ensure you get the appropriate support and opportunities for learning.

Please note that we cannot accept request from students at school, sixth form or are aged 19 or below due to the close proximity in age to our service users.

Anyone wishing for a medical placement is advised to contact Great Ormond Street Hospital as they provide our medical cover and are not here at the hospice every day.

Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate students who require a long-term placement (over 6 weeks) due to our contractual obligations with other institutions.

What we can offer you:

- Supernumery status for the duration of your placement

- Daily allocation of a mentor

- Student induction pack sent out 2 weeks prior to your placement

- Access to our family support worker for support services

- Opportunity to work with our children, young people and their families and to learn more about their conditions, daily life and the problems they face

- Access to journals and books in our resource room.

If you are interested in applying for placement with our care team then please contact Jo Littleson, Practice Development Facilitator at jog@richardhouse.org.uk or telephone 0207 540 0236.

Jo deals with all care team student requests and will be able to tell you if your request can be honoured.

Please include the following information with your request:

- Your full name

- Your age

- Your course of study and your year of study

- The name of your University/ College

- Dates of when you would like to do your placement – please also inform Jo if there is any flexibility with your dates

- The total number of hours you need to work

- The total number of days you wish to work

- Details of any course outcomes you wish to achieve whilst with us

Jo will then contact you to let you know if we can honour your request.

If you are successful, we will require the following from you:

- CRB enhanced disclosure check (please note that this usually takes 6-8 weeks from completion of the form)

- a letter from your course tutor or placements officer confirming who you are, your course of study, your year intake and the dates of your placement

- a letter confirming insurance provisions by the University whilst you are on placement
