Volunteer Case Studies

Our volunteers have many great stories to tell. Some of our volunteers have kindly offered to share their experiences. Why not read what they have to say – we’re sure you will be inspired by their success!

Richard House heartZenab- Play Assistant Volunteer
"I wanted to study medicine but I didn’t want to volunteer at a hospital and push trolleys around all day. When I had an interview at King’s College London, they were really impressed by the Play Assistant programme and my role really helped me secure an offer. Now I can’t stop smiling! Volunteering at Richard House has been a brilliant experience and really useful. There’s a lovely atmosphere. People are really friendly and you don’t regret a single day here."

"I have been volunteering at Richard House for 3 years now, firstly in housekeeping then as a play assistant. In September I started an NVQ in Health and Social Care at college which I am really enjoying. Richard House is vibrant, friendly, really understanding and caring. It’s such a happy environment to volunteer in."

"I have volunteered for Richard House for about four years. I decided I wanted to help a children's charity after one of my own children had a health scare and when the Richard House shop opened in Barking Faircross near me it seemed ideal.

"I keep volunteering because despite it being really hard work, sorting the donation and preparing everything to go on sale whilst dealing with the customers, we have a real laugh. Some of the people I work with have become really good friends. We all work as a team doing everything and anything, that way it is never dull and it is fair to everyone.

"The best thing is meeting new people, both the other volunteers but also the customers who pop in to see us day after day.

"The worst thing is definately customers who try to barter the price down but we explain about the work of the children's hospice and most of them are fine.

"I would encourage anyone thinking of volunteering in one of the shops to give it a go. If you like people, and don't mind hard work, you'll love it. Once you start you just can't stop! I have even dragged my husband along and he is now a regular volunteer as well. What else can you do that is fun and supports such a good cause?"
